The Challenge to Labuan (Italian: Sfida a Labuan) is the second episode of the first season (The Tiger of Malaysia) of the animated series, Sandokan.
Plot[]
Sandokan stays at Labuan to find proof of the wrongdoings perpetrated by Brooke in his position as Governor. At great peril, Sandokan sneaks into the garrison, pretending to be an innocent groom. During the night, he then discovers that Brooke falsifies the account books in order to keep an illegal traffic in diamonds hidden from the government.
As it happens, the diamonds are mined in Kiltar, the former domain of Sandokan’s father. Lady Carradine, the queen’s emissary, then arrives on an annual inspection of the British Colonies. Sandokan tries to inform her of his discovery, but Brooke preempts his intentions. After a furious battle, Sandokan is thrown into the dungeon, along with Yanez, who had tried to come to the rescue after discovering his sense of friendship to be stronger than his innate indolence.
Sandokan and Yanez survive an attempt on their lives while Lady Carradine is oblivious to what is happening, although suspicious of Brooke’s dubious behavior. Unfortunately, she is forced to leave ahead of time to avoid an impending storm. Sandokan and Yanez also leave Labuan on a boat given to them by an old fisherman. Sandokan’s strife with Brooke has only just begun, and the storm at sea promises to be a fearsome experience.
